Wright-Patterson is home to the Air Force Material Command, the 445th Airlift Wing, the Air Force Institute of Technology, and the Air Force Research Laboratory. A lot of aerospace engineering and research has been conducted both in Dayton and at Wright-Patterson since World War II, when the National Cash Register Company started making engines, bomb sights, and codebreaking machines. Dayton is also home to a number of corporate offices, including Huffy Bicycles and Mead.

A major player in the restaurant scene, especially in the areas of Italian food and pizza, Dayton, Ohio is the birthplace of several national pizza chains like Cassano's. The abundance of good pizza in Dayton is a great comfort to the more than 30,000 students studying at the city's universities and community colleges. Wright State University is popular for its medical program, and the University of Dayton for its American Bar Association approved law school.

There is plenty to do in Dayton, OH outside of work or school as well. The area has a number of museums, including the National Museum of the United States Air Force at Wright-Patterson AFB, the largest and oldest military aviation museum in the world, the Dayton Art Institute, and the Sun Watch Indian Village and Archeological Park, which includes a replica of a 12th century Native American settlement.

In Dayton's case, obviously this is Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. The base is less than 13 km from downtown, close enough to be counted as part of the city. Therefore it can be said that Wright-Patterson is an extremely exclusive gated community, as hundreds of people live on base in single quarters or family housing. However, not just anyone can live there. You have to be posted to the base.

Some of the base staff has chosen to live in the rest of Dayton, as you no doubt will if you're not a member of the Air Force.
